![]() In Darwin's Ghosts, Rebecca Stott tells the fascinating story of Darwin's predessors who were involved in the search to understand how life evolved. It is a beautifully written book which engages the reader from start to finish. She gives a historical account of how the idea of evolution has intrigued the greatest minds since earliest times, from Aristotle, Jahiz, Da Vinci onwards. We are introduced to a wide number of characters, some familiar while others less well known. I am presently working on my own response to Darwin's phrase "An Entangled Bank", the metaphor he used to distil the key ideas of natural selection, and to conclude "On the Origin of Species." I am interested by the idea of layers of sediments in which the "secrets", of our past lie hidden, waiting to be rediscovered and uncoded.
